The technologies that have evolved in recent years have had a big impact on communication and dating. This has produced a generation-wide trend of quick sometimes impulsive communicating without fully developed thoughts and emotions. It’s also brought a lot of vagueness and confusion. Do you say “bye” to show you’re done chatting, or just stop messaging? How long should you wait before responding to a text? Does using a period make your text seem too formal or emphatic? If someone you like sends a text asking to hang out, does that mean they like you too?
Does it mean you definitely have plans? It can be really confusing, since the norm is to be brief and casual in digital communication. Unfortunately, sometimes this casual style results not only in a lack of clarity, but also a lack of respect. Breaking up with someone via text doesn’t show a lot of courage or respect, but sadly, it happens a lot. Ignoring someone’s message might mean you’re busy, not interested, or not sure how to respond.

As President of the University of California during the period , Kerr initiated, lobbied for, and oversaw UC’s greatest era of expansion. He addresses three aspects of the campus’s history. He explains the demographics which gave the impetus to UC’s growth; the role of the UC Regents; and his own lobbying efforts within both UC and the state legislature to gain political support for this major undertaking.
Two important influences were his own undergraduate experience at Swarthmore College, and his tenure as Chancellor of UC Berkeley from , which influenced his departure from conventional thinking in the creation of UCSC as an “alternative campus” within the UC system. Conceiving of a research university built around small residential colleges, with an emphasis on undergraduate education, close faculty-student interaction, and human-scale community life, was Kerr’s contribution to the UC system and not incidentally, imaginative institutional response to the contemporary student movement’s critique of the multiversity as a sort of dehumanizing intellectual factory system.
Kerr discusses the selection of Dean E. McHenry as UCSC’s founding Chancellor and their close collaboration in campus planning and design, indicating the specifics of their shared vision as well as their differences. He describes the site selection process, the eventual selection of the old Cowell Ranch, and how decisions on campus land-use, architecture, and landscape design were integral to their overall vision.
In the final portion of the memoir Kerr provides an assessment of UCSC as it has come of age, detailing its strengths and weaknesses; touching on the campus’s organizational, academic, and cultural status as it continues the process of self-definition towards a mature identity. He also comments on the evolution of student activism here and how it has influenced perceptions of the campus.

It is one of 10 campuses in the University of California system. Founded in , UC Santa Cruz began with the intention to showcase progressive, cross-disciplinary undergraduate education, innovative teaching methods and contemporary architecture. The residential college system consists of ten small colleges. Although some of the original founders had already outlined plans for an institution like UCSC as early as the s, the opportunity to realize their vision did not present itself until the City of Santa Cruz made a bid to the UC Board of Regents in the mids to build a campus just outside town, in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains.
In , the California State Senate passed a resolution asking the Regents to consider the Monterey Peninsula , and that same year, the California State Assembly passed its own resolution asking the Regents to consider the Santa Clara Valley. However, Santa Cruz was selected for the beauty, rather than the practicality, of its location, and its remoteness led to the decision to develop a residential college system that would house most of the students on-campus.
