In light of this, last December, Green decided to take matters into her own hands by starting a secret Facebook group to share resources, tips, and blocklists in order to deal with abuse. In late May, seemingly out of the blue, Green dramatically shifted her tone on harassment. In any case, that someone so influential in the progressive online space could make such a complete has shaken the social justice community to its core.

She had great visual aids a cardboard tube with a balloon over it and explained things in an understandable way. I followed her for a while during my phase of being a fan of various YouTubers. I kept some tabs on her over the years, and was familiar with previous kerfuffles about her work. She was bad at those topics, but was generally decent at things that were in her wheelhouse—sexual education and talking about feminism. But this year, something has shifted. You see, we feminists are partially at fault for the choices Laci has made in the past few months.
Ever since she became a pretty damn famous YouTuber, there has been a contingent of the Internet that has insisted on bringing up her past mistakes in any discussion of her work.

Two people in a restaurant booth, one frowning with their arms crossed and the other holding a flower. Anyone who has been simultaneously feminist and single knows that the struggle is real. Online dating has made this task a bit easier. If you notice any of these signs on a date, I would advise you to reconsider your next date with the person exhibiting them. The line of people waiting to get into the auditorium was so long it doubled back to the doors of the room. I was quite literally within comfortable speaking distance of the ticket attendant even though I was at the back of the line. Green, who holds a certificate for date violence and rape crisis counseling, tackled the really big, heavy topic of rape culture well with a prepared, lecture-style presentation.
Her presentation was very much a campaign to bring awareness to the issue of rape culture. She broke down the culture of rape into four components: tolerance, victim blaming, gender roles, and trivializing. Unfortunately, much of the information in her lecture was based on US statistics although still interesting: for example, she mentioned that the most vulnerable citizens are disabled women, with one in three reporting sexual assault.
It was clear that the audience in attendance was fully engaged; there was a moment when Green was talking about how girls and women who are sexual-assault victims are blamed for what happened and asked the crowd what they had been taught as girls to avoid rape. There were many more; it was a very powerful moment. She also talked about how men and boys very rarely report sexual assault, and if they do they are usually not taken seriously.
So, while women and girls are accused of being whores if they are assaulted, men and boys are ignored. The bottom line, according to Green, is that rape culture and the threat or act of rape is about sexual domination and a way to exert power and control over someone else. It comes down to equality; we still have a long way to go.

The group is now held in various forms around the world, with well over a hundred local chapters. The Philadelphia chapter of “Skeptics in the Pub” hosts bi-weekly group discussions on a range of topics related to science and rationality. There’s several things that set our group apart from many other skeptic groups out there:. That means that our regular bi-weekly meetups have a discussion topic and require some preparation and involve active participation. We also occasionally hold informal socializing events for our members called “Drinking Skeptically”.
We typically only address pseudo-scientific beliefs once they become widespread enough to cause major risks or interfere with major benefits to society e. Also, while we generally defer to the scientific establishment, we also occasionally act as critics when it comes to issues like funding biases, academic fraud, and the replication crisis.
That said, those who apply scientific skepticism to the supernatural claims of the world’s various religions usually realize that they’re either empirically false or unverifiable, and thus skeptics tend to become atheists or agnostics, or occasionally deists or pantheists.

Nuclear pore complexes have emerged in recent years as chromatin-binding nuclear scaffolds, able to influence target gene expression. However, how nucleoporins Nups exert this control remains poorly understood. Here we show that ectopically tethering Drosophila Nups, especially Sec13, to chromatin is sufficient to induce chromatin decondensation. This phenomenon is not correlated with localization of the target locus to the nuclear periphery, but is correlated with robust recruitment of Nup Elys.
Furthermore, we identified a biochemical interaction between endogenous Sec13 and Elys with PBAP, and a role for endogenous Elys in global as well as gene-specific chromatin decompaction. Together, these findings reveal a functional role and mechanism for specific nuclear pore components in promoting an open chromatin state.

May 24 is Pansexual Visibility Day. Much like Bi Visibility Day, when bisexual people remove their invisibility cloaks and instead don their fetching bi vis jackets, Pan Visibility Day is a day to celebrate and recognise those who identify as pansexual. The word pansexuality originally comes from Greek. This is different from being attracted to everyone; in the same way that a heterosexual woman will not be attracted to all men and a lesbian woman will not be attracted to all women, pansexual people will experience attraction to specific people and not others.
Being bisexual means being attracted to more than one gender, while being pansexual means being attracted to people regardless of gender. Pansexuality and bisexuality are not in conflict.

A prominent feminist YouTuber has drawn the ire of many of her former supporters after creating several videos criticizing contemporary feminist doctrines and calling out figures in the online social justice community. Last week, Green released the final video in a two-part series on gender identity titled “How Many Freakin Genders,” during which she accused trans rights activist Zinnia Jones of advocating sexual assault against straight men.
Although she did not identify her by name, Green used a censored screenshot of a tweet by Jones as evidence, referring to its content as “gross and creepy. Green’s path to ostracism originally began back in May when she released a video titled “Taking the Red Pill? The video didn’t go over well with everyone, leading many to accuse her of being a traitor to the social justice community at large.
Chris Ray Gun , a pairing many of her former fans found unacceptable. Among her detractors was Zinnia Jones, who publicly condemned the relationship on Twitter by saying “there’s a legitimate case to be made for us trying to push the Laci situation into some kind of breaking point as soon as possible. To make matters worse, Green subsequently found her Twitter feed added to the Block Bot , a public blacklist described as a tool to “silently block trolls, abusers, and other unsavory people.
To top it all off, Green was accused of bigotry earlier this month for mocking a controversial anal sex article published on Teen Vogue , which referred to biological females as “non-prostate owners” in diagrams of human reproductive anatomy. While Green’s has attempted to bridge the ever-growing gaps between the warring camps in the online culture war, it remains unclear how successful her efforts will be in the long run. Perhaps, in the end, she will only find herself welcomed by those who previously saw her as an enemy.

Earlier this week, popular YouTuber Laci Green , with almost 1. Virtually everyone has seen The Matrix or has heard of the red pill meme; indeed, a Google search for red pill brings up almost 7 million results. I have a few more quotes from the video that I think are particularly salient and that I will discuss further down, but first I want to take a moment to clarify what this essay is about.
Specifically, in her video, she finds herself walking a very fine tightrope between appealing to the fan base she has spent so many years of hard work cultivating and the need to feel authentic and congruent with her current views, and then wonders what the future holds in store. In order to ease the sting of this transition, Laci needs to first restate and qualify her liberal credentials and then soften them to pave the way for making sense of her subsequent red pilling.
She then provides a fuller backstory of her life and purpose, describing how she escaped a stultifying Mormon childhood along with some background on her half-Iranian heritage. These are all interesting tidbits but they primarily serve as signifiers of a certain kind of cred. She is both a refugee of the patriarchy and a recognized oppressed minority perhaps Muslim?
Her videos have always presented a sex-positive message, and I completely support her mission.
